Several research groups for experimental, clinical and forensic toxicology in environment, therapeutic and drugs of abuse are located at the Lausanne and Geneva Universities and EPFL. Research is also being done in the fields of occupational medicine, environmental, earth and aquatic biology. Problems and risk assessment of foreign substances are studied at several faculties of the three institutions, e.g.:

• Determination of doping substances, at the The Swiss Laboratory for Doping Analyses (LAD), Epalinges, doping info here

• Analysis of powder substances for illicit drugs, at the Ecole des Sciences Criminelles à la Faculté de Droit de l'Université de Lausanne

• Therapeutic monitoring and pharmacogenomics of psychoactive substances, at the Centre de neurosciences psychiatriques at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), at Prilly

• Clinical pharmacology and toxicology, at the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG)

• Clinical pharmacology and toxicology, at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV)

• Development of new chromatographic procedures for the analysis of medicinal drugs at the Laboratory of Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry, at the Pharmacy School of Geneva

• Analysis of small molecules and peptides by LC-MS-MS, at the quantitative mass spectrometry facility (qMSF) of the CHUV

• Development of new mass spectrometry methods for the identification and quantification of pharmaceuticals, at the Life Science Spectrometry Group of the Pharmacy School of Geneva

• Ecotoxicology, at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ISTE), EPFL, Lausanne (formerly ECOTOX)

• Phytoremediation of polluted water and soils at the Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology (LBE), EPFL, Lausanne

• Metal bioremediation and geomicrobiology at the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (EML), EPFL, Lausanne

• Terrestrial toxicology at the Center for Applied Ecotoxicology (ECOTOX, web site under construction), an outpost of EAWAG

• Ecotoxicity assessment of metals in urban water cycle at the Environmental Biophysical Chemistry Group (EBC), EPFL, Lausanne

• Impact of waterborne xenobiotics on both human and environmental health, at the Institute of Land Use Policies and Human Environment, Faculté des géosciences et de l'environnement (FGE), Université of Lausanne

• Ecotoxicology in lakes and rivers at the Institute F.A. Forel, University of Geneva

• Molecular and cellular mode of action of various bacterial virulence factors, in particular toxins, such as pore-forming toxins or anthrax toxins, Van der Goot Lab., Global Health Institute, School of Life Science, EPFL, Lausanne

• The ability of pollutants to affect human health is a major concern, justified by the wide demonstration that reproductive functions are altered by endocrine disrupting chemicals. The mode of action of these chemicals is studied at the Center for Integrative Genomics (CIG) of the University of Lausanne

• The role of the inflammasome in the pathogenesis of asbestos studied at the department of biochemistry of the University of Lausanne

• Impact of environmental factors on male fertility at The Foundation for Andrology, Biology and Endocrinology of Reproduction (F.A.B.E.R.)

• The identity of biological specimen of suspicious origin can be determined by DNA profiling at the Forensic Genetics Lab. in Lausanne
